Coinbase Wallet Extension® — Getting Started | Coinbase®®

Coinbase Wallet Extension is the official self-custody browser wallet from Coinbase, distinct from the centralized Coinbase.com exchange account. It puts your private keys directly in your browser, giving you full ownership and control over your crypto, NFTs, and Web3 identity without relying on a custodial intermediary.

Self-custody is the defining principle. When you create a wallet, you receive a 12-word recovery phrase that represents complete ownership of your assets. Coinbase cannot recover this phrase, reset your password, or access your funds—if you lose it, your crypto is gone. This is not a flaw but the core feature: no company, including Coinbase, can freeze or seize your assets without your keys.

The extension connects you to the broader Web3 ecosystem. It supports Ethereum and all EVM-compatible networks, including Polygon, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Arbitrum, Base, and Optimism, plus Solana and SPL tokens. You can connect to thousands of decentralized applications—DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, DEXes—directly from your browser toolbar without visiting a separate website.

Security features are built for real threats. Transaction previews show how your token balances will change before you confirm a dApp interaction, so you know exactly what you are signing. Token approval alerts display which assets a dApp is requesting access to withdraw, preventing malicious contracts from draining your entire wallet. A dApp blacklist warns you before you interact with known malicious applications, and spam token management hides airdropped scam tokens from your main view.

Hardware wallet support adds a critical layer. The extension integrates with Ledger devices, allowing you to use the convenient browser interface while keeping your private keys offline on the hardware device. Every transaction still requires physical confirmation on the Ledger screen. For users holding significant balances, this combination of hot wallet convenience and cold storage security is the recommended setup.

Importing from other wallets is straightforward. If you already use MetaMask, Trust Wallet, or another self-custody wallet, you can import your existing recovery phrase into Coinbase Wallet and access all your assets and addresses immediately. This makes switching or trying the extension a low-friction process—you are not locked into one wallet ecosystem.

Key limitations to understand. The recovery phrase is your only backup—Coinbase support cannot restore access if you lose it. You must manually select the correct network before sending funds, and sending on the wrong chain can result in permanent loss. The extension is a hot wallet by design, meaning malware on your computer could theoretically compromise it; for large holdings, pairing with a hardware wallet is strongly advised.

Coinbase Wallet Extension is best suited for users who want genuine self-custody with a polished interface, broad multi-chain support, and Coinbase's security tooling—without surrendering control of their keys to a centralized exchange.
